Summer car rental in Tunisia: a guide for Tunisians abroad

Renting a car in Tunisia for the summer holidays, when you are a Tunisian living abroad, comes down to one thing above all: booking early. July and August bring the family visits home, the weddings and the long stays with relatives, and the available cars go week after week. This guide covers what changes for a summer stay: when to book, which vehicle for a family, documents, payment and the long drives between regions.

Book before your flight… or straight after

In summer, the constraint is not price, it is availability. The most popular models — automatics and the large family vehicle — are the first to run out in the peak weeks of July and August.

Good practice: book the car as soon as your flight dates are known. Booking early costs nothing and commits you to nothing: no card is required, nothing is paid online, and cancellation stays free until the contract is signed at the agency. If your dates move, changes are free up to 24 hours before pick-up.

Picking the car up on arrival

Most families fly into Tunis-Carthage or Djerba-Zarzis. Collecting the car at the airport saves a cousin the trip to fetch you and your suitcases, and leaves you free from the moment you walk out of the terminal.

Enter your real landing time when booking, leaving a margin for baggage: in summer, the queues at passport control and the carousels can be long.

Which car for a family

Most of the models on offer are five-seaters. Two adults, two or three children and their luggage fit in a saloon with a large boot, such as the Dacia Logan or the Volkswagen Virtus, both of which offer more than 500 litres of luggage space.

Beyond that — grandparents along for the trip, cousins, bags full of presents — the nine-seat Peugeot Traveller saves renting two cars. It is the only model of that size in the catalogue, so it is the one to book first.

Air conditioning is not a luxury in the south in July: check that it works during the inspection, before you leave the agency, and bring sunshades for the children in the back.

Documents: what changes when you live abroad

You can show your national ID card or your passport, Tunisian or foreign, as long as the name matches the licence and the booking. A Tunisian driving licence and a licence issued in your country of residence are both accepted if they are valid; a licence not written in the Latin alphabet must be accompanied by an international driving permit.

The minimum age and licence seniority are set out in the rental conditions. If several family members will drive, each must be named on the contract: an undeclared driver is not covered by the insurance. The full list is in what documents you need to rent a car in Tunisia.

Payment: have dinars ready

The rental and the deposit are paid to the agency in Tunisian dinars at pick-up. For a stay of three or four weeks, the amounts are significant: a month's rental exceeds 2,500 TND, plus a deposit of 2,000 to 3,000 TND depending on the model. Get the money ready on arrival, at the airport exchange desk or from cash machines.

The long summer drives

A summer back home often means a week with parents in the south, a wedding at the other end of the country and a few days by the sea. A few pointers:

  • Set off early in the morning. Between noon and 4 pm, the heat makes long drives hard going and tiredness sets in quickly.
  • Avoid driving at night on secondary roads, which are poorly lit and used by slow vehicles.
  • Budget for tolls and fuel: official prices and sample budgets are in our guide to fuel and tolls in Tunisia.
  • Returning the car elsewhere is possible from a minimum rental length, shown in the search as soon as you choose another return location.

Yes, a valid licence issued in your country of residence is accepted, shown together with your national ID card or passport in the same name.
