Fuel and tolls in Tunisia: the official prices

Fuel is price-regulated in Tunisia: every station in the country charges the same, state-set price. Tolls only apply on three motorways out of Tunis. Here are the official figures, and what they mean for a trip in a rental car.

Petrol and diesel prices

Pump prices are set by the energy ministry and are the same at every station, from Agil to TotalEnergies. There is no point hunting for the cheapest one — look for the nearest one when the gauge drops in the south.

How much fuel for a road trip?

A city or economy car uses around 6 L/100 km in mixed driving. At the regulated petrol price, that is roughly 15 TND per 100 km. A one-way Tunis–Sousse drive (145 km) therefore costs about twenty dinars in fuel, and Tunis–Djerba (526 km) about 80 TND.

For an SUV, budget closer to 8 L/100 km, or around 20 TND per 100 km.

Toll tariffs (class 1, car)

Tunisie Autoroutes publishes fares cumulated from Tunis: the figure shown for a toll station is the total you pay from the capital. For a trip between two stations on the same motorway, the difference between the two figures is a good estimate.

In practice

  • Carry dinars in cash for tolls: cards are not accepted at every booth.
  • Card payment is common at fuel stations in the big cities, less so at small stations in the south.
  • Rental cars are usually handed over with a fuel level to be returned the same: check it on the agreement at pick-up.
  • National roads are free: an inland route (Kairouan, Gafsa, Tozeur) costs nothing in tolls.
