Which day trips can you take from Tunis by car? From the capital, five full- or half-day outings cover the essentials: Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, Bizerte and Lake Ichkeul, the Water Temple at Zaghouan, the Roman site of Dougga, and Cap Bon. All of them work as a return trip in a day, less than two hours' drive away. Here is how to plan them, with real driving times and what you need to know about parking.
Carthage and Sidi Bou Said: the essential half-day
The ruins of Carthage, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are spread across several sites scattered through a residential suburb: the Antonine Baths by the sea, Byrsa Hill and its museum, the Punic ports. A car is genuinely useful here for moving between sites without walking miles in the sun.
Sidi Bou Said, the blue-and-white village perched above the gulf, is just to the north. Its centre is pedestrianised and parking is scarce at the top of the village: park lower down as soon as you find a space, then walk up.
Worth knowing: for this outing only, the TGM suburban train, which serves Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa, is a real alternative if you are staying in central Tunis. Save the car for the longer trips.
Bizerte and Ichkeul National Park: a day in the north
Bizerte is 69 km from Tunis, about fifty minutes on the A4 motorway. The old port, its kasbah and the seafront can be explored on foot in a morning.
In the afternoon, Ichkeul National Park, also a UNESCO site, protects a lake and marshes where large numbers of migratory birds spend each winter. The visit is most rewarding from autumn to spring; in high summer the lake is low and the birds have gone.
Zaghouan and the Water Temple: the overlooked outing
About sixty kilometres south of Tunis, Zaghouan sits at the foot of the mountain of the same name. The Water Temple, a Roman nymphaeum, marks the source of the aqueduct that supplied Carthage: arches of the aqueduct still line the route from Tunis, and several can be seen from the car without any detour.
It is the least visited trip around the capital, and one of the most pleasant in spring, when the mountain is green.
Dougga: the finest Roman city in the country
Dougga, a UNESCO site, is 108 km from Tunis, about 1 hour 40 minutes by road. Built on a hillside among olive groves, the site preserves a capitol, a theatre, baths and a network of paved streets among the most complete in North Africa.
Set off early: the site has little shade, and the visit takes at least two hours on foot. If you want to go further west, to Le Kef and Tabarka, our Cap Bon and northern Tunisia itinerary includes Dougga as a stop.
Cap Bon: beaches and vineyards
Hammamet is 67 km from the capital and Nabeul 68 km: the Cap Bon peninsula makes a good beach day, or a full loop as far as Kelibia and its fortress. Touring the peninsula over several days is part of the same Cap Bon and north itinerary mentioned above.

Driving around Tunis
- Leave town before 8 am or after 9:30 am, and come back before 5 pm: the roads into the capital are very busy at rush hour.
- Avoid the city centre if you are not staying there: its one-way streets and difficult parking have nothing in common with the roads out to the sights.
- Collecting the car at the airport lets you head straight for the motorways north and south without crossing the centre.
To rent a car from the capital, start from the car rental in Greater Tunis page, or from Tunis-Carthage Airport if you are flying in.

About 1 hour 40 minutes for 108 km, excluding stops. Allow a full day including the visit.
