Can you rent an automatic car in Tunisia? Yes, and the choice is wider than people expect: on 27 September 2026, eight of the eighteen versions offered on Rencaro were automatics, from city cars to a small 4×4. Manual gearboxes are still the norm in Tunisian fleets, but an automatic is no longer a rarity kept for the top of the range. Here is what it really costs, and how to be sure you get one.
Models available as automatics
Catalogue snapshot of 27 September 2026, for a seven-day rental from mid-October, all-inclusive daily rate:

The cheapest manual, the Kia Picanto, was 85 TND a day. The most affordable automatic, the Kia Rio, was therefore only 10 TND a day more. These prices move with the dates and the catalogue: only the price shown for your search counts.
What an automatic really costs
On the same model, the gap ranges from nothing at all — the Renault Clio 5 cost the same with either gearbox — to 35 TND a day on the Seat Ibiza. On most city cars it sits between 5 and 10 TND a day, or 35 to 70 TND over a week.
In other words, the extra cost is rarely what should decide it. The real question is whether you are comfortable with a clutch in Tunisian traffic.
Who an automatic is worth it for
If you drive an automatic every day, take an automatic. The dense traffic of Greater Tunis, the busy roundabouts and the hill starts are not the place to rediscover your clutch reflexes after several years.
If you will spend a lot of time in town, an automatic makes traffic jams far less tiring. For a stay based around the capital, see the models on the car rental in Greater Tunis page.
If you will mostly be on the open road, between towns by motorway, the difference matters less and a manual remains a sensible choice.
How to be sure you get an automatic
On Rencaro, every listing is a specific version with its own gearbox: a car offered as both manual and automatic appears as two separate offers, each with its own price. The "gearbox" filter on the results page shows automatics only.
The gearbox you book is the one on your booking and in the contract: it is not a surprise at the counter. Still, check it when you sign, along with the model and the registration.
Book earlier than for a manual
Automatics are fewer in the fleets and go first as soon as demand rises, especially in July and August and around school holidays. Booking early costs nothing: nothing is paid online, and cancellation stays free until the contract is signed.
The Jimny, a special case
The Suzuki Jimny is the only 4×4 in the catalogue, and it only comes as an automatic. It makes sense on a trip through the south, for its ground clearance and grip on rough roads. That does not make it an off-roader, though: the rental conditions require you to stay on roads open to traffic, and exclude from the insurance any damage that happens on a private or closed road. In town, its small boot (211 litres) and its price make it a poor choice.
