Can you rent a car in Tunisia without a credit card? Yes. On Rencaro, no card is asked for when you book and nothing is charged online: the rental and the security deposit are paid directly to the partner agency when it hands you the keys. That is a real difference from the big international rental brands, which almost always require a credit card in the driver's name before they will even prepare the car.
Here is how a rental without a card works, from booking to returning the car, and the few things to plan for so the handover goes smoothly.
Why other companies insist on a credit card
At most international rental companies, the card does two jobs: it pays for the rental in advance, and it holds a deposit through a pre-authorisation. That way the company can recover any damage costs without ever handling cash.
For travellers, the system has two well-known drawbacks. You need a genuine credit card — many debit cards are refused — and a limit high enough to absorb the deposit on top of your holiday spending. A limit that is too low, or a card in your partner's name, and the handover stops at the counter.
Independent Tunisian rental agencies more often work with payment on the spot, when the keys change hands. Rencaro has kept that model.
Booking: what you are actually asked for
Booking online takes a few minutes: pick-up place, dates and times, then your contact details. No bank details are requested at any stage.
The price shown is the total price of the rental for your dates, taxes included. It is the best offer we found across our network of partner agencies. Once the booking is confirmed, we assign it to an agency that can fulfil it, and that is the agency you sign the rental contract with.
Because nothing has been paid, there is nothing to refund if your plans change. Cancellation is free until the contract is signed — just let us know at least 48 hours before the pick-up time. Changing your dates is also free up to 24 hours before the rental starts, although the price may change with the new dates.
Paying at the agency, in Tunisian dinars
At pick-up you hand the agency two separate amounts: the rental price for the agreed period, and the security deposit. Payment is in Tunisian dinars (TND). If the site shows you an amount converted into euros or another currency, it is for guidance only; the binding amount is the one in dinars.
You cannot buy dinars abroad. You get them on arrival, at the airport exchange desks or from cash machines, which are easy to find in towns and terminals. Keep your exchange receipts: you will be asked for them to change your remaining dinars back when you leave.
If you plan to pay in cash, withdraw the money before you head to the agency rather than hunting for a cash machine once you are there, and count the notes in front of the agent.
The deposit, with or without a card
The deposit does not disappear just because no card is needed; it simply takes another form. The amount depends on the vehicle and is shown on each listing before you book. On the models available on 27 September 2026, it ranged from 2,000 TND for city cars to 3,000 TND for the nine-seat minibus.
Depending on the agency, the deposit may be paid in cash or secured another way; if you have no card, plan to bring the amount in cash. It is returned when you bring the car back, minus any sums owed. Ask for a receipt that clearly states the amount — that is what you will show to get it back.
What the deposit covers, what can be kept from it and how to get all of it back is explained in our article on the car rental deposit in Tunisia.
What to have with you at pick-up
A rental without a card relies on a few documents and on having the money ready. The day before, check that you have:
- your original driving licence, still valid;
- your original ID, national ID card or passport, in the same name as the licence;
- the rental amount and the deposit, in dinars;
- your booking confirmation, available offline.
Age and licence-seniority requirements are those in the rental conditions you accept when booking. The full list of documents, and the mistakes that stop a handover, are covered in what documents you need to rent a car in Tunisia.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Tunisia?
No. Many rental companies require one, but on Rencaro no card is needed to book, and both the rental and the deposit are paid directly to the partner agency at pick-up.
Can I pay for a car rental in Tunisia in euros?
The contract and the payment are in Tunisian dinars. Exchange your euros on arrival or withdraw dinars from a cash machine: an amount shown in euros on the site is only an indicative conversion.
Does the agency cash the deposit?
No, it is not a payment. The agency holds it for the duration of the rental and returns it when you bring the car back, minus any sums owed — missing fuel or uncovered damage, for example.
Can I rent without a bank card for several weeks?
Yes, it works the same way whatever the length. For a long stay, see also how the daily rate changes in our article on long-term car rental in Tunisia.
