How do you get from Tunis-Carthage airport to Hammamet, Nabeul or Sousse? By car, allow about an hour for Hammamet (72 km), a little more for Nabeul (74 km) and nearly two hours for Sousse (150 km), almost all of it on the A1 motorway. There are alternatives — taxi, louage, train — but none of them takes you and your luggage straight from the terminal to these towns. Here is what each option costs and involves, so you can choose to suit your stay.
Driving from the airport
| Destination | Distance | Driving time | Toll (class 1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hammamet | 72 km | 1 h | 1.800 TND |
| Nabeul | 74 km | 1 h 05 | 1.800 TND |
| Sousse | 150 km | 1 h 55 | 3.900 TND |
| Monastir | 180 km | 2 h 15 | 3.900 TND |

For fuel, with a city car using about 6 litres per 100 km and unleaded petrol at the official price of 2.525 TND a litre, the one-way trip costs around 11 TND to Hammamet and about 23 TND to Sousse. Prices and toll details are in our guide to fuel and tolls in Tunisia.
The route, simply put
Leaving the airport, follow signs for the A1 motorway towards Hammamet and Sousse: the route avoids central Tunis and the motorway is a few minutes away.
- For Hammamet and Nabeul, leave the motorway at the exit signed Hammamet and Nabeul, then follow signs for your town.
- For Sousse and Monastir, stay on the A1 past Enfidha. Monastir is reached by the coast road from Sousse.
Arriving at night? The motorway is the safest road at those hours: stay on it as long as possible rather than taking shortcuts along secondary roads.
The alternatives to a car
Taxi. Taxis wait outside the terminal. For a trip to another town, the fare is not metered: agree the price with the driver before you get in. It is the simplest solution for a one-way trip, but a return journey quickly costs more than several days' rental.
Louage. These shared taxis leave from the louage stations in central Tunis as soon as they are full. It is the cheapest option, but you first have to get from the airport to the station, then travel with your bags on your knees.
Train. Trains to Sousse and Cap Bon leave from Tunis central station, not from the airport. As with the louage, you first have to cross the city.
When a car is the best choice
Renting becomes the most practical solution in three cases:
- you are staying more than three days and plan to leave your hotel: Hammamet, Nabeul and the Cap Bon coast are hard to explore without a vehicle;
- you are travelling as a family, with luggage and children, and a shared taxi is out of the question;
- you land late or leave early, at hours when the other options are scarce.
Collecting the car at the terminal also means returning it there on the day you leave, with no transfer to organise. How a terminal pick-up works is explained in renting a car the moment you land at Tunis-Carthage airport.
Returning the car somewhere other than the airport
If your stay ends somewhere other than Tunis, returning the car in another town is possible from a minimum rental length. Choose a different return location in the search: the required length and the total price, one-way fee included, are shown before you book.
For the cars available at the terminal, see the car at Tunis-Carthage Airport page. And if you are unsure when to go to the Sahel coast, read when to rent a car in Sousse.
